Common name: Kentucky coffeetree, coffee
Gymnocladus dioicus is a large deciduous tree native to central and eastern North America. A member of the Pea Family (Fabaceae), the seed pods of the Kentucky coffee tree were used by early settlers as a coffee substitute. Caution was required as the seeds are poisonous if not well roasted. Tree of the Month. It has white flowers in early summer, and turns yellow in autumn.
